Continue Project

Most complex R&D takes multiple phases or multiple years to complete. In the InspiRD app, this multi-stage development is represented through multiple annual or shorter projects. InspiRD builds these chains of multi-year projects using the Continue button. This function creates a copy of the selected project and it children tree, and links them in time.

Continue functionality is available for technology projects and root product projects. Only root projects can be continued.

To continue a project, select the root project to be continued and click the Continue Forward button. Or click the down arrow next to the Continue Forward button and click Continue Backward button.

  • “Forward” in time indicates move towards a desired end-state. Use “Forward” when planning from the ground up and moving forward by stage gate.
  • “Backward” in time indicates move backward from a desired end-state. Use “Backward” when management has a desired final stage gate as a future goal and then work backwards to define the project plan.
  • Number of months by which to shift the start and end date of the new project / phase
  • The Continue dialog box may be used to make several changes to newly created project and its sub-project tree. These changes include
  • New Maturity Level
  • New Project Status

A new copy of the selected project and its children is created.

  • All sub-projects are continued with a root project.
  • The changes above are applied to all children projects being continued. Use the edit dialog box to make any modifications.
  • If the project contains any Inserted link adjunct project, these links (and their children) are copied into the new continued project.
  • If the project contains a transitioned link adjunct project, a new copy of the project is created in the continuation.
  • Note that co-developed link adjunct projects cannot be continued. Instead, the link prime must be continued, and the new project re-linked.

The selected project now shows a ‘Next Project’ indicator icon in the info column and the new project shows a ‘Previous Project’ icon. Mouse hover on these icons will provide more information about next and previous projects in the continuation chain.

Continued projects are shown grouped together by default. A + sign is shown to the left of the continuation group to ungroup them. A – sign is shown next to the base continuation item to group them together. Projects cannot be edited while grouped together.

Continue buttons are disabled if:

  • A root project is not selected
  • The project has an existing continuation (each phase can be continued only once in each direction)
  • The project is in the middle of a continuation chain
  • You do not have RW access to the selected project or PRW access to its basis platform

InspiRD App logs all changes made with the continue function. Email notifications are sent to the owner of the project (if enabled). All changes are automatically propagated to link adjunct copies and appropriate log entries are made.
